An insider's guide to the best bars in Patmos, including trendy hangouts and courtyard spots, by Marc Dubin, Telegraph Travel's Greece expert.

Stoa

Under the leaping arches of a designer-converted medieval cellar lies Hóra’s trendiest bar, aka Theo's. Lounge, ethnic, Latin, jazz soundtrack, occasional special/DJ'd events; significant Greek fashion-victim patronage.

Arion Café-Bar

The sort of place – wood-coffered American West saloon in getup inside, but resolutely Greek in function – where everybody ends up at some point in their stay. Breakfasts and snacks by day (from people-watching outdoor tables), classic rock and soul soundtrack after 10pm. Going since the 1970s.

Pougki

The only competition to Stoa in Hóra, with seating both inside (rather cramped) and out in the little courtyard. Opened late summer 2015, but still considered one of the 'in' bars of the island.

Address: 30m west of Platía Levías, Hóra, below the chapel bell wall

Opening times: late May–Oct, nightly

Koukou Bar (ex-Koukoumavla)

A slightly alternative spot (think exhibited local artists, special events) with a psychedelic interior colour scheme, and outdoor side terrace for warmer hours, including late breakfasts. Thursday, Friday and Saturday are busiest, with Latin/Greek nights and DJd events. Under new ownership since late 2016, so expect further changes.

Address: 100m inland from Konsoláto fishing anchorage

Opening times: daily, 10am until late, much of the year
