Gross smell from UCC Coffee Australia roast house in Melbourne is sparking anger
A coffee roast house in Melbourne’s inner north has been hit with a compliance notice due to a bad smell being produced by the venue.
Mocopan, which is owned by UCC Coffee Australia in Preston, has been issued a remedial notice by the Envronment Protection Agency (EPA) due to the odour.
It comes after residents in the built up area were the first to flag the smell with authorities.
EPA Northern Metro manager Jeremy Settle said the stench is, surprisingly, not similar to the regular scent of coffee.
“When you’re dealing with this kind of volume and concentration of the odour, it actually changes to a more acrid kind of burning toast, burning coffee, and it really lingers, and it’s been drifting into a number of residents’ homes,” he told 3AW.
“The company hasn’t been taking all steps to eliminate odour.”
The business was first hit with a remedial notice in early 2021, but according to the EPA, has not yet worked to change or decrease the odour.
Its latest notice will also require Mocopan to provide monthly community updates on what it’s doing to improve the smell.
